Visas, Beginning of School, Apartments

Just to clarify, I won't need a student visa as I am applying for citizenship, right? My understanding is that all I'll need is an EU passport.

Also, does our school year begin in September or August? I know that you had mentioned that we will be getting flights around August 25th. Does this mean we are in school at that time? If we want to arrive a week earlier to get settled can we arrange this as well? Will our apartments be available in August?

Antonella

Dear Antonella,

If you hold an EU passport you have the legal right to work in any EU country. The procedure to be followed is short and easy and does not require that special authorizations be obtained prior to arriving in Italy. If you hold an Italian passport, you don't need any special authorization, of course, to work in Italy.

I you intend to come to Italy as an Italian citizen, please make 100% sure that you have your citizenship and Italian passport in hand by the time you arrive in Milan. I don't know how long it takes to get Italian citizenship, but I will be (pleasantly) surprised if it is doable in five months.

If you do not have an EU passport, you must jump through all the nonsensical hoops that I have outlined to obtain a student visa which will eventually morph into a work visa.

Cheers,

Day

P.S. Friday, glorious Friday! It has rained for two days, but they say we should see the sun again this weekend.

August 31: Aperitivi with new and returning faculty

September 1, 2, 3: All faculty Orientation Workshop at locale to be determined.

September 4: All faculty work at BES

September 7, 8: All faculty Second Language Acquisition Workshops with Dr. Virginia Rojas

September 9, 10, 11: Preparing for start of classes.

September 14: First day of school with students.

  2. With regard to early arrival in Milan, yes it is possible for you to come early by purchasing your own ticket and being reimbursed. However, find out first how much we will reimburse you. We get very good deals on tickets and will only reimburse up to the amount that our travel agent quotes us.

However, your apartments will not be ready before August 27, so if you plan on coming early you will be on your own. I will return to Milan on August 26 in order to be here to greet and assist new faculty members from August 29. BES offices will not open until Monday, August 31.

If you plan to come early to travel in Italy before coming to Milan on August 29, make sure that you have completed all the requirements and have your student visa stamped in your passport. Alternatively, make sure that you have an EU passport in your hand by that time.

  4. Hi Day,
I was wondering which airline your travel agent will be booking us through? I'd like to be able to bring my dog with me under my seat in a small carrier (she's under seven pounds).

  5. I'll try to find out. When Liz and I were in Canada recently, the business office got the best deal on Lufthansa\Air Canada through Frankfurt on the way there and Munich on the way back. Alitalia no longer flies non-stop from Toronto to Milan, unfortunately.
