Questions from Antonella about rent, salary, taxes
Antonella asks if the rent on BES apartments includes utilities and if not how much you can expect to pay. Also, if teachers pay only 10 months of rent per year, what about the other two months? Are teachers paid a ten month salary or a twelve month salary? Also, are teachers paid over the vacations? In terms of income tax, do teachers pay Italian income tax? If so, what percentage of take home pay is that?

Yes, rent includes utilities. There are no additional fees that I am aware of. The school pays the rent over the summer (two months). It is my understanding, however, that you still have access to the apartment, so it you want to travel you can use it as a base to come home to. Salary is over 12 months and yes, you are paid over the holidays.
ReplyDeleteThe salary scale, including monthly stipend, is based on net salary, the amount that goes in your pocket at the end of each month. The taxes are paid by the school and they are complicated. While you are working on your student visa you are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week. That amount is taxed at a certain rate. (I don't know what the exact taxation rate is.) The rest of your salary is paid to you as a °scholarship". Your tax rate changes once your student visa is changed into a regular work visa, but that takes about a year and a half. However, the amount that goes into your pocket each month is based on the salary scale which is quoted in net salary so your monthly amount does not change.
These questions are important for all of the new hires. Do you mind if I post them on the blog? I addressed them with some of the candidates during the interviews, but with all of the excitement some of the people will likely not remember.
